From the moment at which Arthur passes out.
- wakes up to kicking; finds that it is raining. Runs about madly looking for his sister.
- sees people stood blindfold in rows and hit on the back of the head with shovels; summary execution. They are dropped into pits and buried immediately, though some are still alive.
- looks for his sister among the rows, cannot find her. She may already be buried.
- groups together with other stray kids. They run away to the next town and meet the resistance.
- They become soldiers.
- Arthur becomes a hardened soldier but is haunted by his guilt over his sister's disappearance. He meets a young girl who is reminiscent of her and dies saving her.
